Lately I've seen old and new school HP fandom clashing. Everything there's a big change in the fandom there always is and the Park is a Big Deal. It's no one's fault. It just happens.

However I have seen something odd. There's a phrase that some of the fresh fandommers are using that is annoying the New Schoolers, but meant something completely different to the Old Schoolers and it's causing a lot of wank.

New Schoolers think it's in bad taste. For some of the fresh fans, it's begging for reviews. For the Old Schoolers it's completely different. Some newbies in the HP fandom are serious Old Schoolers in other fandoms that still use it the way it started on ff.net years ago.

This phrase is: please review.

There were longer phrases, I honestly don't remember what they were, but I remember a huge relief when 'please review' was settled on. It was shorted because of the limited space for summaries ff.net offers. It is not begging for reviews. It is not asking for con crit.

It is asking for unabashed criticism, flames or no flames. Anyone who writes this at the end of the tiny summary space they give you wants real critiquing. It is not about what the fic does right, although a nice comment on occasion is nice. It's about breaking down a fic into pieces and pointing out what needs to be dealt with. Tell me Hermione's a Mary-Sue before I get carried away by my own ego! Tell me why someone in a large family would act differently than an only child and that my Ron sucks nads! Explain to me why the potion I just came up with would turn blue instead of red because of the materials and the application of heat! Tell me when the chemistry's off in a relationship!

It also means exclamations are fine. 'Crap!' 'OMGWTF?' and 'hahaha' are welcomed.

I have one fic with lots of reviews and no reviews. No one had a word to say about it good or bad? Did they even make it through or did they hit the 'back' button? Was it too blah? Did someone post a link to it so they could flame away at it in their little safe community and I'm completely unaware of its faults? Or are there 200 people biting their nails while they wait for another chapter to come out.

In other news:

http://community.livejournal.com/canonflashback opens up tomorrow.

We're going to pretend we just hopped into a time machine. Put all your HP books and references to the side. Pretend they don't exist.
Tomorrow Chapter One of the First Book will be revealed. Discuss it as if were the only thing you have read.

EXAMPLE

Chapter 1 we know:

Harry Potter is called the Boy who Lived.
Voldemort, AKA You-Know-Who is no longer, and people are happy about it.
It is implied Professor McGonagall and Professor Dumbledore are important people.
McGonagall can turn into a cat.
Dumbledore has a Put-Outer.
Dudley is spoiled and misbehaves.
Mrs. Dursley spies on the neighbors.
Mr. Dursley keeps things from his wife if he thinks it will upset her.
People in cloaks are about and owls are flying during daylight.
Mr. Dursley likes yelling at people at work.
The Dursleys do not think highly of the Potters.
The Dursleys had never seen Harry until he was left on the doorstep
Mr. Dursley works for a drill company: Grunnings.
Detalus Diggle likes fireworks.
It's insinuated 'Muggles' are normal people and the people with cloaks are different.
Dumbledore likes Sherbert Lemons.
The Potters lived in Godric's Hallow.
When Voldemort tried to kill Harry, the magic bounced back to destroy him.
The Dursleys are the only family Harry has left.
Dudley can walk and talk when Harry's an infant.
Dumbledore is afraid fame will destroy Harry.
Dumbledore has a position over Hagrid.
Hagrid borrowed a flying motorbike from Sirius Black.
They leave Harry on the doorstop with a letter.
Mrs. Dursley screamed when she found Harry.
Dudly immediately began bothering Harry.

Then we will discuss, write fic based on what we know, and will have little contests along the way as we reread the series week by week. We will probably have extensions during holidays. (I don't know which ones yet. I don't know what other people celebrate.)

Study materials can be provided if needed.

That's a really interesting premise for a comm. Of course, it means Snape doesn't exist yet. I'd love to kid myself that I could make time to join in the fun, but I know what I'm like for writing fic as if I'm wringing blood from a stone, so unless I clear some WIPs, I'll have to pass, but I just might watch, if that's okay.

If we're going one chapter a week this could be going on for a LONG time.

I absolutely cannot wait to start re-reading the books. I've read them countless times, but each time I discover something new that I didn't pay attention to before, things that were brought up again later however many books down the road.

We also KNOW Minerva was waiting all day at Privet Drive. We ASSUME she is in contact with Arabella's cats as extra protectors for Harry. But that is much later.
